28mm Wide-angle* Leica DC VARIO-ELMAR lens with 10x optical zoom

Leica DC VARIO-ELMAR lens
The TZ series feature a 28mm wide-angle* LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens with 10x optical zoom (35mm equivalent: 28-280mm) in a compact body. The lens unit comprises 11elements in 9 groups, with 1 ED (Extra-low dispersion) lens and 3 aspherical lenses, including a dual-sided aspherical meniscus lens, to achieve high optical performance while maintaining compactness. This lens gives you all the power and flexibility you need to take remarkable telephoto, wide-angle, or macro shots, and dramatic portraits. The TZ series inherits the fine rendering and outstanding quality of the LEICA ELMAR lens, enabling these easy-to-carry cameras to deliver beautiful pictures any time, any place.

Advantages of the 28mm wide-angle* lens

The 28mm wide-angle lens* lets you easily capture large groups of people indoors or expansive architectural structures and scenes with dynamic width and rich perspective, even from short distances.

* Converted to standard 35mm film camera equivalent, at the maximum wide position.

Powerful 10x optical zoom easy zoom function
The TZ series are equipped with a 10x optical zoom lens (35mm equivalent: 280mm). The extended optical zoom function uses the centre part of the CCD to extend this 10x zoom ratio to a powerful 16.9x zoom (TZ5: 35mm equivalent: 473mm) / 15.9x zoom (TZ4: 35mm equivalent: 445mm) at a resolution of 3-megapixel or less. Adding the extended optical zoom to the 4x digital zoom* extends the total zooming power to a maximum of 67.5x (TZ5: 35mm equivalent: 1,890mm) / 63.8x (TZ4: 35mm equivalent: 1,786mm). You can take advantage of the TZ series’ 10x zoom and snap photos that capture the subject in a clear, sharp focus while giving the background a beautiful soft focus.

* As digital magnification increases, resolution significantly decreases.

Easy zoom function

Now, zooming is even easier. Even when the zoom is set to a position lower than 10x, the first press of the easy zoom button immediately gives you the maximum 10x power of the optical zoom. A second press delivers the maximum 16.9x (TZ5) / 15.9x (TZ4) power of the extended optical zoom.* This lets you bring your subject right up close, easily and comfortably.

* If the resolution is set to a level higher than 3-megapixel, the camera will automatically change it to 3-megapixel. Pressing the button a third time will return the lens to the wide-end (1x) position, and reset the resolution to the ordinary level. If the resolution is set to 3-megapixel or less, the image will be taken at the set level.

1/2.33-inch 9.1-megapixel high-resolution CCD*
The DMC-TZ5 features a newly developed CCD. Slightly larger than previous types, this 1/2.33-inch CCD fully supports the camera's 9.1-megapixel resolution.

* The DMC-TZ4 features a 1/2.5-inch 8.1-megapixel CCD.

High image quality – Venus Engine IV

Venus engine
In the Venus Engine™ LSI, we improved diagonal resolution by 50% over earlier models by extracting luminance signals from all of the pixels — red, green and blue. And the Venus Engine™ IV even goes a step further by adding the luminance signal from the green pixels in areas with horizontal or vertical lines. We have raised horizontal or vertical resolution by about 10%. Images are rendered in fine detail and without visible colour bleeding.

Enhanced subject-motion detection circuitry (Venus Engine™ IV)

The TZ models are equipped with the Venus Engine™ IV and the motion detection in the Intelligent ISO control function has been further enhanced to suppress motion blur even more effectively.

Fast response - 0.008 second shutter release time lag

The TZ series slashes the release time lag to 0.008 second minimum by increasing both its circuit speed and the point at which it detects the shutter release signal. The shutter interval is also shortened to around 0.9 second minimum*. This makes Lumix® cameras extremely quick and responsive and they let you capture images comfortably even at a moment's notice and are a pleasure to use.

* Not including auto-focusing time. The shutter release time lag varies slightly between models.

Superior noise reduction without losing image details

An advanced noise reduction system detects chromatic noise and luminance noise separately. In addition, the Venus Engine™ IV enhances this detection by effectively reducing highly noticeable low-frequency chromatic noise in advance, while delicately applying noise reduction (NR) processing to detailed areas to prevent the colour bleeding that often happens when NR is used. Together, they let you capture crisp, high-resolution images with minimal graininess even when shooting at a high ISO setting.

Full resolution MEGA burst/Unlimited*** consecutive shooting and High-speed burst mode**

In spite of their high resolution, the TZ series lets you snap off consecutive shooting at 2.5 fps* (TZ5) / 3 fps* (TZ4) with full resolution. By using the Scene Mode's Hi-speed Burst setting, you can enjoy extremely fast consecutive shooting of up to 6 fps** (TZ5) / 7 fps** (TZ4). The Unlimited*** Consecutive Shooting function lets you keep on shooting until the memory card is full. You can take a series of shots, then choose the ones you like best and delete the rest.

* Maximum of 7 images in Standard mode and 4 images in Fine mode for TZ4 and maximum of 5 images in Standard mode and 3 images in Fine mode for TZ5.
** In 2-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording.
*** The consecutive shooting speed varies depending on the memory card. The number of recordable picture depends on the memory card size, battery life, picture size, and compression.

Low energy consumption

The energy-saving Venus Engine IV image-processing engine and our efficient, rechargeable lithium-ion battery work together to extend the shooting time of the TZ series, making it possible to take approximately 300 shots (TZ5) / 330 shots (TZ4) on a single battery charge* despite the large, bright and high-resolution LCD.

* Based on CIPA standards.

Intelligent auto mode (iA)
This mode not only eliminates blurring from hand-shake or subject movement, it also helps you capture perfect people shots by detecting the face and selection the focus, exposure and scent mode that get the best results… and it’s all automatic!

Continuous AF

The TZ series feature continuous AF function which automatically and continuously focuses* on your subject, providing a clear, sharp focus even for moving subjects. This is ideal for capturing images of animals in nature and sports or other events, and is equally handy for taking photos of children and pets. It helps to ensure that pictures of sudden shooting opportunities will not be out of focus or blurry.

* The focus speed may be slower in dark surroundings.
Note: Continuous AF is automatically turned on in iA Mode and can be turned on or off in Normal Picture Mode.

Digital red-eye reduction (DMC-TZ5 only)

iA mode also helps avoid the red-eye problem you get when taking flash shots at night. Red-eye reduction for the built-in flash works by emitting a small preliminary flash before the main flash. Furthermore, thanks to the digital red-eye correction function, red-eye problems are automatically detected and corrected digitally.

Face detection

The face detection function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure. You can take clear, beautiful portrait shots easily. It detects up to 15 faces in a photo, and automatically readjusts the settings if their positions change. In iA mode, the quick AF function automatically begins focusing without having to press the shutter button halfway, so the shooting process is smooth and easy.

Intelligent exposure

The camera instantly analyzes the framed image and adjusts the brightness in areas that are too dark due to dim lighting, backlighting or use of the flash. Adjusting the brightness of dark areas this function produces natural images that are close to the way they actually look to the human eye.

Motion detection (Advanced intelligent ISO control)

Thanks to Intelligent ISO control, the camera can determine whether or not the subject is moving. If the subject is moving, Intelligent ISO control changes the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed accordingly. You get clear, beautiful shots with no motion blur even when photographing kids who won't stay still.

Scene detection – Intelligent scene selector

When the camera is iA mode, the Intelligent scene selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night portrait or Night scenery mode accordingly. It makes several other advanced image settings too, so you're assured of getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject. With the Intelligent scene selector doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.

* In iA mode, night portrait is not identified when the flash is turned off and night scenery is not identified when the flash is set to auto.

Shake detection

Gyrosensors detect hand-shake and an O.I.S. lens shifts to compensate, preventing hand-shake blur. This system is completely optical – it does not affect the CCD or image processing – so you get sharp, clear images without deterioration. Furthermore, the MEGA O.I.S. system featured in new Lumix® models also distinguishes hand-shake from other kinds of camera movement, improving both detection and correction.

Intelligent LCD

9 Area AF
The number of AF areas has been increased to nine. The camera automatically determines the most appropriate AF area from the nine points. This ensures accurate focusing even for difficult compositions. You can also select the AF setting from five patterns -- Face AF, 3-area high-speed AF, 1-area high-speed AF, 1-area AF and spot AF -- according to your shooting situation.

Intelligent LCD
The TZ5 has a 3.0" LCD high resolution of 460,000 dots*. This large LCD lets everyone view images together and its crisp clarity is ideal for shooting and viewing photos. The TZ series features an Intelligent LCD function that automatically controls the LCD brightness in 11 steps. Under bright sunlight, the Auto power LCD function increases the backlight brightness in nine steps according to the ambient light intensity. In dimly lit locations, it adjusts the frame rate of live images in 2 steps according to the ambient darkness. At the highest of these 11 steps, the LCD backlight becomes 1.4x (maximum) brighter than normal. This makes both shooting and viewing photos easier and more convenient.

* The DMC-TZ4 has a 2.5” (230,000 dots) LCD.
