LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT Lens
The world’s first* integration of retractive lens with folded optics technology allows the zooming to occur horizontally within the camera. This makes it possible to pack a powerful 10x optical zoom – equivalent to a large 35 to 350mm lens on a 35mm camera - into a compact camera. The Extended Optical Zoom function, which magnifies the image
with minimal deterioration by using the centre part of the high-resolution CCD,
boosts the zoom power to a maximum 12.5x**.

A little hand movement can be a big problem
All of us have taken a shot that we thought was focused perfectly, only to have it turn out blurry. The most common cause of this is hand movement. Digital cameras are wonderfully light and compact – but for the same reason they can also be hard to hold still. Even pressing the shutter button can cause the camera to move. And shooting with arms outstretched – using the LCD monitor which makes it easier to frame a shot – adds to the likelihood of hand movement. That’s not all. Basically, hand movement is a real concern anytime you’re taking a handheld telephoto shot, macro shot or self-portrait, or when shooting at night or in dim lighting.
Help keep your shots steady even if you’re not
We’ve got the answer to the hand movement problem -- An advanced optical image stabilizing system that we call MEGA O.I.S. Optical Image Stabilizer. This system uses built-in gyrosensors to detect even tiny camera movement and then shifts a lens in the opposite direction to compensate. The system is completely optical – it does not affect the CCD or image processing – so you get sharp, clear images with no loss in image quality. If you know cameras, think of MEGA O.I.S as having an effect similar to increasing the shutter speed by about three steps*. It greatly expands what you can do with a handheld digital camera.
* Varies with the shooting conditions.
Two Image Stabilizing Modes
Lumix® cameras offer two image stabilization modes. In Mode 1 the O.I.S. lens is always compensating for camera movement, so the image is clear and easy to see even when you’re looking at the monitor or through the viewfinder. This makes it easy to frame your shots. Mode 2 provides a slightly higher level of stabilization. Choose the one that’s best for the scene you’re shooting.
Enhanced Resolution for more Beautiful Images
In the previous Venus EngineTM image-processing LSI, we improved diagonal resolution by 50% over earlier models by extracting luminance signals from all of the pixels – red, green and blue, and now vertical resolution has been increased by about 10%. Images are rendered in fine detail and without visible colour bleeding.
Instant Accurate Auto Focus
Lumix lets you choose from standard 1-point AF, 1-point and 3-point high-speed AF for moving subjects, spot AF to focus on a selected area, 5 or 9-point AF for a sharp focus regardless of where the subject is positioned in the frame.
Less Energy Consumption
Even with advanced functions like MEGA O.I.S. and a large, high-quality LCD monitor, the Venus Engine Plus and Venus Engine 3 use around 70% less energy than the Venus Engine II. This, plus the use of a longer-lasting battery, greatly increases the number of shots you can take on a single battery charge.
Linear Auto Focus
The TZ1 introduces a new Linear AF system,
which has resulted in the achievement of an industry-leading fast
auto focusing time. Not only the speed but also the noise of the
motor is reduced and it is now even possible to zoom in while
recording motion images. The superior AF capabilities also enable an
increased speed in continuous AF, allowing easy and precise focusing
even when shooting moving subjects. Together with the TZ1’s overall
quick response time and the power of the Venus Engine III, this
linear AF system also contributes to the short start-up time of 0.95
sec.You get the kind of quick zooming and fast focusing that lets
you catch every shooting opportunity.
Super-Fast Shutter Response
Refinements have led to a super-fast response, with a release time lag as low as 0.005 second* and consecutive shooting at a quick 3 frames per second. The Unlimited Consecutive Shooting** function lets you keep shooting until the SD Memory Card is full.
* Not including auto-focusing time.
** The consecutive shooting speed varies depending on the memory card or the
built-in memory.
Noise Reduction at High ISO Settings
A newly designed noise reduction system detects colour noise and brightness noise separately, letting you capture crisp, high-resolution images with no graininess even when shooting at a high ISO setting.

Mode Dial
A single, easy-to-use dial for beautiful shots in most any situation.
Simple Mode
All settings are made automatically, so it’s easy to take beautiful photos even if you’ve never before used a digital camera. Just aim and press the Shutter Button. When shooting directly into a light source, press
the Cursor Button – this will turn on the Backlighting Compensation Mode so the object doesn’t appear too dark.
Normal Picture Mode (Program AE)
The camera automatically sets the aperture and shutter speed according to the subject’s brightness. You can adjust the white balance, ISO sensitivity, and other settings* to give a photo a more expressive look.
* Settings for these options can be adjusted in all modes except Simple Mode and Moving-Image Mode.
Macro Mode:
You can focus on subjects as close as 5 cm from the lens*.
* When shooting with the lens at the wide-angle position. Varies by model.
Motion Image Mode
This mode records moving images with audio at either 30 or 10 frames/sec, (QuickTime Motion JPEG) in wide VGA* or VGA** size. If you need to shoot great amounts of footage simply choose an optional, large-capacity SD Memory Card.
*
848 x 480 pixels / ** 640 x 480 pixels (QuickTime Motion JPEG). The length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SD Memory Card.
Note: In Motion Image mode, when you
set picture quality to [30fps VGA] or [30fps in 16:9],
we recommend using a high-speed SD Memory Card with "10
MB/s" or greater.
Playback Mode
Enjoy functions such as slide shows, 25/9-window display, and enlarged views of the images. Also you can place virtual checkmarks on your favourite images to group them together, and then make a favourite image slideshow.
Scene Mode
Select from the following 18 modes according to the shooting conditions. Pressing the left of the cursor button opens a help screen that explains what each mode is for.
High Sensitivity Mode
This mode helps suppress motion blur by automatically setting the ISO sensitivity up to 1600, which increases the shutter speed. It also lets you take clearer, sharper shots of moving subjects in dim lighting without using a flash. The picture quality is good enough for printing at the ordinary 4" x 6" (10 x 15 cm) size.
* When using High Sensitivity mode, resolution significantly decreases.
Beach Mode
This mode is good for shooting under strong sunlight.
Aerial Photo Mode
This mode is good for shooting through an airplane window.
Underwater Mode
This mode gives natural colours to your pictures even when only a small amount of sunlight reaches the subject. To be used with optional underwater marine case.
Self-Portrait Mode
Simply aim the camera at yourself and the LED will light up to tell you when you are in focus. Then, after you press the shutter button, you can see the results on the LCD.
Soft Skin Mode
Detects skin tones and softens detail only in skin areas to make wrinkles and blemishes less noticeable, while preserving resolution in non-skin areas.
Candle Light Mode
This mode catches the natural colour of candlelit sites without damaging the warm atmosphere.
Baby Mode 1/2 Records the baby’s age in months and day by calculating back to his/her birthday, which is set in advance, and shows it on the image when it is played back. You can set two birthdays to apply to two children’s records of growth. It also gives the subject a slight skin softening effect to maximize the purity.
