25mm ultra-wide angle Leica DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens with 5x optical zoom

Leica DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens
This sophisticated 25mm wide-angle lens system features 7 elements in 6 groups, including 4 aspherical lenses / 6 aspherical surfaces and an EA (extra high refractive index aspherical) lens. It’s also equipped with a 5x optical zoom. The wide-angle lens lets you capture dramatic images that convey an impressive sense of breadth and depth – remarkable for such a compact camera.

Advantages of the 25mm wide-angle* lens
The 25mm wide-angle lens* lets you easily capture large groups of people indoors or expansive architectural structures and scenes with dynamic width and rich perspective, even from short distances.

* Converted to standard 35mm film camera equivalent, at the maximum wide position.

5x optical zoom and 9.8x extended optical zoom
The FX580 is equipped with a 5x optical zoom lens (35mm equivalent: 25-125mm). The extended optical zoom function uses the centre part of the CCD to extend this 5x zoom ratio to a powerful 9.8x zoom (35mm equivalent: 244mm) at a resolution of 3-megapixel or less. Adding the extended optical zoom to the 4x digital zoom* extends the total zooming power to a maximum of 39.1x.

* As digital magnification increases, resolution significantly decreases.

1/2.33-inch 12.1-megapixel high-resolution CCD
Slightly larger than previous types, this 1/2.33-inch CCD fully supports the camera's 12.1-megapixel resolution.

Touchscreen operation

Advanced hybrid control system
The DMC-FX580 incorporates a 3.0-inch large touchscreen interface to achieve amazing ease in both shooting and playing back the images. LUMIX proposes a hybrid operation system combining the touch-screen interface and the conventional operation system with cursor key for more quick and intuitive control, by taking advantage of both operation systems. Basic menu settings can be directly controlled by the cursor key, and others extensive ones are finely adjusted by touch or by moving a slider on the screen with the finger or an included stylus-pen. The DMC-FX580 touch-screen operation brings new enjoyment to the digital photography.

 Touch AF/AE
With the DMC-FX580, auto focus and exposure can be set at the desired part of the frame by simply touching the subject at that part to activate the AF/AE. This eliminates the need to make adjustments after pressing the shutter halfway, allowing you to set the desired composition and appropriate exposure easily and accurately. This is also helpful when you would like to designate the subject out of other objects in the frame, to set best appropriate focus and exposure right on it.

 AF/AE tracking
Once the AF/AE subject is selected by touch control, it continues to track the subject even if it moves. This is especially helpful for catching active children or pets. It also conveniently tracks the subject when the person taking the photo is riding on a moving object. And it minimizes the shutter time lag for spur-of-the-moment shots.

AF/AE tracking adds to the intuitive ease of the iA mode
The iA (Intelligent Auto) mode of the DMC-FX580 has a feature that is not offered on any other LUMIX model. Touch AF/AE Tracking let you set auto focusing and auto exposure and then track a moving subject by simply touching it on the screen. New levels of ease and flexibility combine with highly accurate auto focusing and auto exposure to make the iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode even simpler to use.

Easy organization menu
In playback mode, an Easy organization menu is provided to simplify image organizing. You can quickly select an image to view by scrolling the thumbnails located below the main window, and then edit the image by resizing, trimming, leveling and inputting the text title of the picture. You can also flag the desired image as your favorites or delete them in one menu interface.

Easy playback with touch operation
The Touch scroll control feature lets you advance to the next image (or return to the previous one) by simply brushing a finger across the screen. Other convenient playback functions made possible by touch-panel operation include Multi playback, which lets you view thumbnails of up to 30 photos at once, Easy search and Sort, and Zoom playback.

Easy white balance adjustment
Just touch the slider bars to fine-adjust the white balance. Colour temperature can also be adjusted in a range of 2500 to 10,000 K in 100-K intervals.

Picture playback touch zoom
Zoom playback has become even more convenient. By simply touching the part to be enlarged, you can zoom in as much as 16x. The zoom area can be dragged in any of four directions for speedy and precise confirmation.

Smooth manual operation
In Shutter-priority AE, Aperture-priority AE and Manual modes, just touch the slider bars on the LCD to set the shutter, aperture and exposure correction values.

High image quality – Venus Engine V

Venus engine V
The image-processing engine, Venus Engine V, uses advanced signal processing to give you beautiful images even when the sensitivity is high. Multi-task signal processing is employed for all images to enable high-speed, high-performance shooting. Venus Engine V, with even greater accurate detection system, makes it possible to detect specific person’s face in new Face Recognition function. Along with its extremely high performance, Venus Engine V reduces power consumption thanks to a number of energy efficiency improvements.

Fast response - 0.007 second shutter release time lag
The FX580 slashes the release time lag to 0.007 second minimum by increasing both its circuit speed and the point at which it detects the shutter release signal. This makes Lumix® cameras extremely quick and responsive and they let you capture images comfortably even at a moment's notice and are a pleasure to use.

Higher image quality with advanced signal processing
Luminance noise and chromatic noise are reduced separately in a Panasonic’s advanced noise reduction system. In addition, the Venus Engine V enhances this detection by effectively reducing highly noticeable low-frequency chromatic noise in advance, while delicately applying noise reduction (NR) processing to detailed areas to prevent the colour bleeding that often happens when NR is used. As a result, beautiful images with minimal noise can be reproduced all the way up to ISO 1600 high sensitivity at full resolution while colour noise is less noticeable in shadows and other dark areas even when shooting with low sensitivity.

Full resolution MEGA burst / Unlimited consecutive shooting
The DMC-FX580 lets you snap off consecutive shots at 2.3 fps*1 with full resolution. The Unlimited*2 consecutive shooting function lets you keep on shooting until the memory card is full. You can take a series of shots and then choose the ones you like best and delete the rest. You can also select Hi-speed*3 or Flash*3 burst mode from Scene Mode.

*1 Maximum of 5 images in Standard mode and 3 images in Fine mode.
*2 The Consecutive shooting speed varies depending on the memory card. The number of recordable picture depends on the memory card size, battery life, picture size, and compression.
*3 In 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording.

 Low energy consumption
Despite the significantly increased performance of the camera, the Venus Engine V consumes only 84% of the power utilized by the Venus Engine IV. This energy-saving image-processing engine and our efficient, rechargeable lithium-ion battery work together to extend the shooting time of our cameras, making it possible to take approximately 350 shots on a single battery charge*.

* Based on CIPA standards.

Intelligent auto mode (iA)

Intelligent auto mode (iA)
This mode not only eliminates blurring from hand-shake or subject movement, it also helps you capture perfect people shots by detecting the face and selection the focus, exposure and scent mode that get the best results… and it’s all automatic!

Digital red-eye reduction
iA mode also helps avoid the red-eye problem you get when taking flash shots at night. Red-eye reduction for the built-in flash works by emitting a small preliminary flash before the main flash. Furthermore, thanks to the digital red-eye correction function, red-eye problems are automatically detected and corrected digitally.

Face detection
The face detection function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure. You can take clear, beautiful portrait shots easily. It detects up to 15 faces in a photo, and automatically readjusts the settings if their positions change. In iA mode, the quick AF function automatically begins focusing without having to press the shutter button halfway, so the shooting process is smooth and easy.

Intelligent exposure
The camera instantly analyzes the framed image and adjusts the brightness in areas that are too dark due to dim lighting, backlighting or use of the flash. Adjusting the brightness of dark areas this function produces natural images that are close to the way they actually look to the human eye.

Motion detection (Advanced intelligent ISO control)
Thanks to Intelligent ISO control, the camera can determine whether or not the subject is moving. If the subject is moving, Intelligent ISO control changes the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed accordingly. You get clear, beautiful shots with no motion blur even when photographing kids who won't stay still.

Scene detection – Intelligent scene selector
When the camera is iA mode, the Intelligent scene selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night portrait or Night scenery mode accordingly. It makes several other advanced image settings too, so you're assured of getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject. With the Intelligent scene selector doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.

* In iA mode, night portrait is not identified when the flash is turned off and night scenery is not identified when the flash is set to auto.

Shake detection
Gyrosensors detect hand-shake and an O.I.S. lens shifts to compensate, preventing hand-shake blur. This system is completely optical – it does not affect the CCD or image processing – so you get sharp, clear images without deterioration. Furthermore, the MEGA O.I.S. system featured in new Lumix® models also distinguishes hand-shake from other kinds of camera movement, improving both detection and correction.

 Subject detection - AF tracking
Once you focus on your subject, AF tracking automatically tracks it until you press the shutter. When you're taking pictures of an active subject, like children or pets, this function eliminates the need to press the shutter button halfway down repeatedly to readjust the focus. AF tracking makes sure you don't miss those once-in-a-lifetime shooting opportunities.

* For use in iA mode, AF Tracking must be selected from the setting menu in advance.

Intelligent LCD

11 Area AF
The camera automatically determines the most appropriate AF area from the 11 points. This ensures accurate focusing even for difficult compositions. You can also select the AF setting from five patterns -- Face AF, 1-area high-speed AF, 1-area AF, 1 spot AF and AF tracking -- according to your shooting situation. Plus, Quick AF makes sure you won't miss those sudden shooting opportunities.

Intelligent LCD
The FX580 features a 3.0" LCD with a total of 230,000 dots for high resolution. The Auto power LCD function increases the backlight brightness in 11 steps according to the ambient light intensity. At the highest of these 11 steps, the LCD backlight becomes 1.4x (maximum) brighter than normal. This makes both shooting and viewing photos easier and more convenient.
